The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is a nonprofit medical research organization that is one of the world's largest philanthropies, with laboratories across the United States and grants programs throughout the world. Through its grants program and other activities, HHMI helps enhance science education at all levels and maintain the vigor of biomedical science worldwide. Its headquarters and conference center are located in Chevy Chase, Maryland, near Washington, D.C.

Funding for MCSB is provided through the Interfaces Initiative, a collaborative venture of the HHMI and the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering of the National Institutes of Health. This initiative supports the development of graduate-level biomedical research training programs in emerging interdisciplinary fields. In 2005, UCI was one of ten institutions funded by this initiative.
