Meng Yu passed his Advancement Examination and advanced to Ph.D. candidate status.

Meng was one of the seven students in the first class of MCB students admitted to start graduate studies at UCI in the Fall of 2007.  Upon completing the one year MCB curriculum, Meng entered the Math Ph.D. degree program to work with Professor Jack Xin in speech separation for better hearing.   Though this is only the end of his second year at UCI, Meng passed all the comprehensive examinations and all the qualifying examinations in Mathematics prior to the spring quarter 2009.  He completed his Advancement Examination with a research presentation on what he called the "Cocktail Party Problem"; and passed without any qualification or reservation on the part of the examining faculty members. 

In addition to being the first MCB student who advanced to candidacy,   Meng also made the UCI Brief in May, 2009 for his research on a new speech separation algorithm.  Also in June, he was awarded the Euler Prize for Outstanding Promise as a Graduate Student by the Department of Mathematics.
